Chen Yin-ke, Fu Si-nian: Intellectuals? Knowledgeable people?

Chen Yin-ke, Fu Si-nian: History and Literature

(What-if) USSR Invaded France During WWII...

What if USSR invaded France during WWII? OK. we know that the Third Reich is sitting between them, and it has beaten one and almost beaten another. However, if we draw France and USSR together and fight, what will happen? (uh, sounds like a Red Alert mission...) Image it:
Near the Ligne Maginot (Maginot Line), a Soviet commissar (political officer) announces to soldiers with a speaking trumpet:

The one with the rifle shoots!
One out of two gets a rifle.
The one without follows him!
When the one with the rifle gets killed, the one who is following
picks up the rifle and shoots!
Next to the Ligne Maginot, the Soviet soldiers line up and stare at the line...the speaking trumpet announces again:

Soldiers of the glorious Red Army, from now on...
it is either victory or death!
Those who retreat will be shot.
There will be no mercy For cowards and traitors!

The Soviet attack starts (Uraaaaaa!!!!)... and frustrated.
Soviet soldier A:

It's hopeless, comrades.
Get back!

Soviet commissar:

In the name of the Soviet Union, not a step backwards, or we shoot.
No retreat! Not a step back!
No mercy!
Deserters will be shot.

Soldiers keep retreating.
In order to motivate them, Soviet commissar said:

Fire!
Shoot the traitors!
Cowards will be shot!
No mercy for cowards!

Da-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da...

10 Minutes later, French armor vehicle broadcasts to the corpse mountain :

Russians, surrender.
You will see your home again.
This is not your war.
Join your French comrades,
They understand your suffering...
and will care more for you than your own officers,
who are only sending you to your death.
La Troisième République (The French Third Republic) is not your enemy.
The enemy is blood thirsty Stalin And his Bolshevik camp,
who have stolen your land, who have deported your father-

OK I admit it's boring...

GOOGLE CHINA/

I love to Google, but I really don't like the company Google China (谷歌). When mentioning google something, we simply say we "GOOGLE" it, or "估狗" it (the approximate pronunciation of google). "狗" means dog, and some people even say we "release the dog to search it for me".

However, Google China doesn't think above two common term works for them. They arbitrarily "invented" a no-one-uses-it "谷歌" (songs in a valley). They may think the term is appropriate than dog. However, for Google Taiwan they just plainly brand them "Google Taiwan" instead of inventing something completely stranger.

Moreover, the worst thing for Google China is it helps the PROC [1] to censor the information in Mainland China. When you enter "六四" (6/4, Tiananmen Square Massacre) in Google.com, it will return normal information about the incident. (related wikipedia, photo, youtube, blog...). However, if you do the same thing at GOOGLE.CN, it will never return any information about the incident- all you get is irrelevant information. At the bottom of the search, Google China will tell you "据当地法律法规和政策,部分搜索结果未予显示" (some of the search results are not shown in accordance with local regulations and policies".

Personally I am not pro or con about the incident. However, people deserve to know what others talk, write, think. If the government did the right thing, there is nothing to hide, right?

[1] People's Republic of China, communist mainland China. They are usually confused with ROC-Republic of China, which is actually TAIWAN

Convert PDF to Word File / 把PDF轉換成WORD

If you work in an office, or you are familiar with word processing, then you must already know how to convert a word file into a .pdf file very well. Usually this is done through a virtual "PDF printer", therefore you can virtually "print" any document as a decent PDF file. However, if the process needs to go backwards, it's really painful- basically it's only one way doc-2-pdf. When you try to copy-paste from pdf to a doc file, you will surely lost all the format, and just gives you some awkwardly arranges texts. You may need to start from the scratch in your word.

(I am not sure if full version acrobat works, but I don't want to pay for it)

And I found a good site:
http://convertpdftoword.net/Default.aspx

which allows you to upload a PDF (converted by word, I assume), and returns you a decent .doc file that keeps almost all the original format.

Schloss Neuschwanstein

Schloss Neuschwanstein

The palace has appeared in several movies, and was the inspiration for
Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland Park and for the Cinderella Castles
at the Magic Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland.
